Referral System
In any hospital patients are cared for by a multidisciplinary health team, including nurses of various categories, doctors, specialists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pathologists, etc. This all depends on the various needs of the patient. The same approach is followed at “Mom & I”, although the patient might not experience the care as being given by a team.
You may wonder what we mean by this... Well, although you will have most of your contact with your midwife and you enjoy the privacy and intimate relationship, this does not happen in a vacuum. Excellent relations between the midwife, gynaecologists, general practitioners, sonographers, laboratory staff and general hospital staff remains crucial in order to ensure your baby’s safe arrival in this world. Referral and cooperation between members of the multidisciplinary health team ensures that risk factors are minimized and emergency treatment is immediately available when needed. In addition, your consultations with Sr Linda does not exclude the availability of expert advice, which she taps in to regularly to give you optimal care, even when you do not consult directly with various members of this collaborative team.
No consultation or referral will take place without thorough discussion between you and the midwife. Referrals are also done with careful consideration of your financial situation and all measures are taken to limit your costs to the minimum. Essential interaction between you and other members of the multidisciplinary health team will for example include at least two ultra-sound examinations done by a sonorologist/medical practitioner. Your midwife will advise you about the important strategic times in the pregnancy and the relevant options available in order to get maximum value out of this experience. If a home birth is considered a final check-up by the “back-up” doctor or other gynaecologist will also be advised.
